Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

A type of health insurance plan that requires you to choose a primary care physician and get referrals to see specialists. HMOs generally have lower premiums and out-of-pocket costs, but less flexibility in choosing providers. You must use in-network doctors except in emergencies.
